Edamame is also called vegetable soybean, beer bean and green soybean. It requires high temperatures and at minimum 65 days of growth to produce edible beans. There are many cultivars that can be grown in international conditions. Edamame varieties that are suitable for American gardens are:
“BSH20” These beans can be frozen for the entire year and are great for making fresh edamame in the summer. They can grow to the height of 10 to twenty-two inches, and an average weight of eleven pounds. They grow yellow flowers. Another variety is “BSH Tomorrow’s Delight” which is a well-loved green soybean variety.
“BSH Tomorrow’s Fruits” harvested in April, has been specially designed for American consumption. It includes 21 different cultivars, and includes eleven varieties of sweet red beans and three varieties of black beans. This variety is also available in canned form. The canned version of “BSH Tomorrow’s Fruits” contains twenty-one different cultivar s and includes two sours and three mixtures of sweet black and red beans. It also includes sea salt and calcium chloride.
American soybeans that are grown in Japan and China were introduced to the United States in recent years and have enjoyed huge popularity. These soybeans are known as “organic”, but they aren’t as expensive as those grown in conventional herbicide-free areas. One of the most popular kinds of soybeans is soybean edamame. It is made from soybeans which were rinsed and then placed in hot water. It is high-protein and low in fat and sodium, and has a pleasant flavor.
The National Soybean Board sells edamame in two sizes: large and small. I was unable to find any information on the dietary recommendations for edamame in the United States. Based on the information I’ve read, it is safe to conclude that the high concentration of minerals and protein is safe for daily consumption. Anyone who has difficulty digesting regular soy proteins should consume large quantities of edamame to overcome their inability to digest regular soy proteins. People with food allergies may need to limit their intake of soy to tiny amounts.
It is interesting to note that edamame contains phytoestrogens. This is a kind of estrogen. Certain studies suggest that estrogens can trigger the growth of breast cancer cells, so this could be a concern for women who is concerned about her health. I’m not knowledgeable enough about the phytoestrogens in order to find out if there’s evidence that they affect testosterone and other hormones. Other legumes are grown in the United States that can grow to be as tall as corn but smaller than beans. These beans are sold at Asian markets in my region and in health food stores. They’re sold as long beans, or wet-canned edamame. I didn’t get any information regarding the nutritional value of the beans, other than to say that they’re rich in protein and relatively low in fats.
Raw edamame is a good alternative if you’re thinking of adding it to your diet in order to gain more protein. You can consume just a few ounces raw if you purchase it already prepared. If you have trouble eating raw it’s an excellent idea to add soy sauce and maybe a little bit of crunchy lettuce or some radishes to round it out. It’s a great source of vitamin B-12 and iron. The beans themselves are nutritious, full of protein, and low in fats. This snack will satisfy your cravings and keep you fuller longer.
